Interdisciplinary Research

Organizational evolution and dynamics research group aims to study the long-term evolution of organizations. We aim to genuine, dynamic interdisciplinary research by combining the methodologies, theories and sources of various disciplines, including history (economic, art, cultural), communication studies (PR and journalism), cultural anthropology, and economics (business, entrepreneurship and management).

With organizational evolution we understand how organizations, public and private, are shaped by institutional, economical, and intellectual environment. With dynamics we mean the exogenous and internal factors that make this environment and force organizations evolve, perish or, in some cases, linger on. Our understanding of organizational dynamics embodies the idea that organizations are in a constant co-evolution with their operational environment.

The Group was created in 1998 at the University of Jyväskylä (as Business History Group) and is lead by professor Jari Ojala. We collaborate closely with research groups in Helsinki University of Technology, Tampere University of Technology, and with number of scholars all over the World. We have received funding from Academy of Finland, TEKES (Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) and different foundations (e.g. Helsingin Sanomat Foundation).

The Group is divided to four sections:

The team of this sub-project aims to better understand the ongoing changes in the information business.
