Fight for and against the vote: the conflict between the suffragettes and the British Parliament in the Edwardian Britain

In my doctoral thesis, I am studying the fight for women’s suffrage in Edwardian Britain. The focus will be on the radical suffragette organization, Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and its members as well as on the British Parliament. As primary material for my study, I use the debates of the House of Commons and the House of Lords as well as the autobiographies, writings and speeches of the WSPU members, also known as suffragettes.

The main focus of the study will be on the history of concepts. The suffragettes and the British Parliament used various concepts such as “women’s suffrage”, “freedom”, “citizen” and “citizenship”, in their writings and speeches. The research will focus on how the concepts were used in the primary sources in order to express arguments concerning women´s suffrage. What kind of arguments did the suffragettes present for women’s suffrage, and how did the MPs debate for and against it? The study will thus centre on a comparative analysis of two different political agents: the suffragettes and Parliament.
